West Ham make contact to sign Mohamed Bayo

West Ham United have contacted Clermont Foot, exploring the possibility of signing young talent Mohamed Bayo this summer.

According to Le10Sport, West Ham have made an approach in the pursuit of Mohamed Bayo. The centre-forward has emerged as a potential target for the Londoners, with David Moyes seemingly keen on securing the services of a new striker.

West Ham have already contacted Clermont, exploring the possibility of the move. They are facing stiff competition from LOSC Lille and Bordeaux but the Hammers are leading the chase due to their financial prowess over the two Ligue 1 outfits.

Bayo is considered a star figure at Clermont. His 22 goals and seven assists in 38 Ligue 2 matches last term were essential in helping the club gain promotion to the top-flight. The forward has continued his good form in the top-flight as well, starting the campaign with three goals in just two matches.

The 23-year-old has starred in wins over Bordeaux and Troyes, helping Clermont Foot register six points in just two matches and remain at the top end of the Ligue 1 table prior to Matchday 3. Standing at 1.88m, Bayo’s imposing presence in the box coupled with his goalscoring prowess seem to have attracted the attention of West Ham as well.

It is no secret that the Hammers are in the market for a new centre-forward who can serve as an alternative for Michail Antonio. Bayo fits the bill perfectly due to his physical and goalscoring abilities that are tailor-made for the English brand of football.

The Clermont Foot star isn’t expected to cost a fortune either even though his current contract at the club doesn’t expire at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. It is a welcome sign for West Ham as they look to finally land an exciting talent after failing in their pursuit of multiple players this window.

Indeed, the Hammers have been linked with too many strikers this month, namely Gaetan Laborde, another one of Ligue 1’s rising stars while the highly experienced Luuk de Jong is also a potential option.

But in Bayo, the Londoners may find themselves an exciting young forward, who might be better fitted in the Premier League due to his style of play. David Moyes prefers a player that can offer the work rate, pace and stamina in the final third, potentially making the Clermont Foot forward one of the top candidates for the Europa League participants this season.

Clermont’s Mohamed Bayo not for sale and likely to extend contract

As reported by RMC, promoted Clermont’s Ligue 1 leading scorer Mohamed Bayo (three goals in two games) is not for sale and an extension of his current deal is the most likely outcome for the striker this summer.

Despite Bayo’s clear desire to leave, say RMC, Clermont are now looking to negotiate a new deal for the in-demand striker who’s current contract expires in 2023.

Bordeaux had been linked heavily with last season’s Ligue 2 top scorer, making a 6m bid which was rejected by Clermont with Bayo being integral to their survival hopes.

Declan Rice of West Ham United during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and West Ham United
Declan Rice is unhappy that West Ham United have effectively priced him out of this summer’s transfer market by valuing him at £100million and has no plans to sign a new contract.

West Ham are currently the only Premier League club not to make a single permanent signing this summer and have not demonstrated to Rice that the club can match his ambition.

Despite remaining committed to West Ham and determined to continue to give his best for the club, Rice wants to challenge for trophies and play Champions League football.

Manchester United and Chelsea are admirers of Rice, but both clubs have been put off making a bid by West Ham’s insistence that the 22-year-old would cost £100m - more than Chelsea paid for striker Romelu Lukaku.

West Ham will compete in the Europa League this season, but, having seen Jesse Lingard return to United, the club’s squad is currently weaker than the one that finished last term.

Any approach to re-sign Lingard, either permanently or on loan, could prompt United to ask about signing Rice but the England international fears West Ham’s valuation would scare off the Old Trafford club.

A summer spent with the England squad, among Premier League and Champions League winners, at the European Championships convinced Rice that he needs to advance his club career.

Other than United and Chelsea, it is also anticipated that Manchester City could show an interest in Rice next summer, when Fernandinho’s contract, which was extended by 12 months, is due to expire.

City spent £100m on Jack Grealish, by exercising the release clause in his Aston Villa contract, and are still chasing striker Harry Kane, who would cost even more and believes he has a gentleman’s agreement with Spurs that he can leave.

Telegraph Sport exclusively revealed that Rice has already turned down two new contract offers, which included significant wage increases, but that has not prompted a change in West Ham’s stance.

The situation is likely to result in Rice running down his present deal, which will have two years to run at the end of this season, and effectively force West Ham to lower their asking price.

It is believed that both United and Chelsea may have already bid for Rice had his valuation been set at between £60m and £70m, with the Chelsea still interested in Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, who has a £68m release clause in his contract.

Rice proved with his display in the opening-day victory over Newcastle United that he will continue to give his all for West Ham while he is at the club and captaining the team when Mark Noble is not playing.

But West Ham’s unwillingness to negotiate this summer will only strengthen his resolve to force the club’s hand over his future and any attempts to re-open contract talks are set to be knocked back.
